Gardening can’t, nor should be, all work with no fun. It’s equally important to connect with your garden and nature by noticing and appreciating small things.
- Press some autumn leaves to frame. Maple, Ash, Sumac, Beech, Boston Ivy, and Cherry, to name but a few, all press very well and hold their colour vibrantly.
- Make a seasonal wreath. Ivy tendrils, cones, hips and autumn leaves all look lovely and can just be composted when it’s gone past it’s best.
- Cut a few interesting and architectural seed heads to display in your home. But leave the majority of them for overwintering pollinators. Some good examples are Agapanthus, Honesty, Teasel, Opium Poppy and of course Rose Hips.
- Visit an orchard and enjoy the colours and aromas. If you’re lucky they might have some of their own cider and apple juice for sale.
- Reward yourself for your hard work. Make jam and tarts. Bake seasonal treats. Enjoy admiring your autumnal garden, wrap up with a hot drink and have some quiet time with the birds and the autumn sunshine.
- Visit a garden like Mount Usher for example. The summer isn’t the only time these gardens are beautiful and interesting.
Whatever you decide to do, enjoy and savour every moment. Autumn is a really special season and it can be gone in the blink of an eye if we don’t take time to notice it. Nature is winding down and so should we. ๐๐
